On this week’s topic of sustainability, I would like to take the time to address Steve Madden’s latest shoe collection and sub-brand, Cool Planet. Not only is Steve Madden always up to date with the newest fashion trends, the company has made it a priority to think and perform in a more ethical and environmental way while still offering stylish and affordable footwear. Cool Planet by Steve Madden launched this spring in April of 2021 and consists of a variety of styles that range from sandals, sneakers to heels. Being carefully produced with recycled synthetic rubber and polyester offering a new and second life to those materials previously found in the form of water bottles and other plastic waste.
To get a better look on the development of Cool Planet, I have carefully reviewed Steve Madden’s sustainability report to trace their progress and discovered the brand has been in the making since the year 2019 during the company’s establishment of Shoecycle. A program that focuses on rescuing unwanted shoes from customers and brands for the purpose of recycling and reusing them to develop new footwear as well as to keep them from ending up in landfills. This process resulted in the creation of Cool Planet.
One common appearance that can be seen in almost every style of shoe contains of a marine-like finish along the soles. Pushing the eco fashion statement further to really touch on the topic of environmentalism and reality of the fashion industry’s contribution in polluting our oceans. This feature definitely sparks a conversation on this issue we currently face and paints a picture for the viewer to relate this problem and the brand’s commitment to resolve it.

The company has also transitioned all of their packaging methods to practice a cleaner manufacturing process by redesigning their shoe boxes to be 90% composed of post consumer waste leaving the remaining 10% made from virgin pulp. For all other packaging procedures Steve Madden has dedicated its manufacturing practices to proceed with using non chemical substances working only with natural dyes, adhesives and plant based inks for all printing work that is normally found on tags,labels and boxes.
In order for Cool Planet to maintain its efforts in being sustainable, Steve Madden has collaborated with FABSCRAP a non-profit organization which collects unwanted waste and provides recycling services. Even then, it has developed a second partnership with non-profit organization, One Tree Planted to ensure you as a consumer can play a role in contributing to a cause that can help restore our planet with every purchase you make.
